I Rescued...

Dear Adopter,

Congratulations on your puppy adoption!  We sincerely thank you for adopting a rescue puppy. We rescued him/her from a kill shelter which means the days were numbered for him/her to be euthanized.

Since we're a foster-based rescue, before the puppies are adopted, fosters take them into their homes. And I am the first to say, we have the best fosters on the planet! They are dedicated to rescuing these pups from harsh and overcrowded shelter conditions. The puppies go to fosters and get warm baths, good food and lots of cuddling. Our fosters will tell you how the pups sit on their laps and watch TV with them, sleep with them, and go places with them! Fosters love these pups for you.  Their role is crucial because these pups need attention and hope.

PupSavers' fosters receive training and information on fostering from how to keep their puppy areas sanitized to what to watch for in a puppy's behavior to when to be concerned a pup needs medical care. If a pup is showing any signs of illness, we take him to the vet and do not adopt him until he's well.

We take many precautions and excellent care of the pups before they're adopted. Bless their hearts, if you could see the pups when they first arrive, it would break your heart and make you even more grateful to the fosters for doing their part in rescuing these little guys who do not have a chance of survival where they started.

At the adoption event, volunteers talk to you about the puppies, answer questions and walk you through the adoption process. I review the applications, conduct interviews and answer any lingering questions you have.

But the rescue doesn't stop at the adoption event. Each adopter picks up where the rescue and fosters leave off by taking the pup home, loving him, and making him part of their family forever.

At the event you probably heard me say that adopting a puppy is a lot like adopting a baby because it's a serious lifelong commitment. Adopting a puppy means taking complete responsibility for him. You can't return him like a pair of socks purchased at the department store. And like with kids, and I'm speaking as a mother here, you have to take the good with the bad:
With puppies chewed dress shoes are part of the package.
House training takes patience.
Barking happens.
And if the pup gets sick, just like a child, you take him to the doctor and follow the given medical recommendations to get him well.

As part of the adoption agreement, you are required to take the pup to the vet within five days of adoption to protect the pup's health. This is the reality: You have adopted a rescue puppy and this means you are continuing his rescue from any unseen illnesses or behavioral problems just like it's your responsibility to protect him from physical harm and danger.

Your pup is a lucky dog! He'll always receive good nutrition and quality vet care, he'll take obedience training classes, he'll go with you on walks and hikes and visits to dog parks, he'll have lots of toys to play with and he has a long happy life ahead of him. A life he would not have if you had not adopted him.

You are continuing his rescue, that is why I opened this letter with a heartfelt thank you for adopting a rescue puppy. Please, keep this in mind and keep proper perspective and realistic expectations of the rescue and your adopted pup.

I, PupSavers fosters and volunteers started the rescue and you are completing the rescue of your pup by adopting him as your new best friend and family member. So, on behalf of PupSavers and your puppy, thank you for adopting!

All the best,

Debra Maxey

PS Keep in touch! Send emails with photos and updates and stop by adoption events. We love seeing the puppies grow!

To continue the rescue's mission to promote responsible pet ownership, adopters agree to have her/him spayed/neutered and provide proof to PupSavers. Remember: Return the spay/neuter letter!
